Ryan Adams talks about his new process for making records at Abbey Road (2011):

“I started that band The Cardinals. I’m proud of everything we did. I think maybe we shouldn’t have probably made the last record. There were so many songs and, you know, Pro Tools was becoming a staple in the studio and we ended up (ab)using it.”

“I wonder if when the original members of that band kind of split from The Cardinals if I should’ve called it in; got back to this, because I really like this. I really like playing.”

“If you’re playing by yourself or even playing an acoustic instrument with other instruments that are playing within the reach of their own volume I really think dynamic properties happen and it really gives songs so much room. And that’s how they’re written and as soon as I did it I realized—I’m like, “Man, this is how I wrote these. What am I doing?”

“But when I left my former label I think I had a 9 album deal and some of the records I had made weren’t counting. There’s many loopholes and tricks that kept me in longer than I probably should have been. Um, which was unfortunate because I wasn’t making any of the money and uh, I think it’s okay to say that, and if they have a problem with that they can kiss my ass. But, it’s true I just really want to make music and have it be simple and I like for the art to be beautiful and to matter because I think that there’s enough disposable culture—specifically in the country that I am from—that there really should be—that you should put the effort in.”

“By the time it was time for me to make a serious record I just made it on my own. We called in the band. We did it all analog. It never touched a computer. There won’t be computers on my records ever again.”
